During the visit to the United States from January 15th to 18th, 2014 to participate in the First meeting of Joint Ukrainian-American Working Group on Intercountry Adoption in Washington, DC, the Ukrainian delegation and diplomats of the Consulate General of Ukraine in New York met the representative of the US institute on adoption.
The meeting, which was opened by Consul General of Ukraine in New York Igor Sybiga, was attended by Head of the Directorate, Office of the Ombudsman for Children under the President of Ukraine Mrs. Liudmyla Volynets, Head of Intercountry Adoption Unit of the Consular Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mr. Sergii Kulykov and diplomats of the Consulate General of Ukraine in New York. The meeting was attended by Adam Pertman, President of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute.
During the meeting, held at the Consulate General of Ukraine in New York, Head of the Directorate, Office of the Ombudsman for Children under the President of Ukraine Mrs. Liudmyla Volynets informed the participants on Ukrainian policy in adoption sphere, outlined the current situation of national and intercountry adoption, stressed upon the importance of protection of children's rights in Ukraine as well as the importance of timely filing post-adoption reports on living conditions of children adopted by the U.S. citizens.
Adam Pertman outlined the activity of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, which is a pre-eminent research, policy and education organization in the field of adoption.
During the meeting, the participants exchanged statistics and research results in the field of adoptions conducted in Ukraine and the United States, informed of the survey results on public attitudes in both countries.
Special attention during the meeting was paid to searching the possible ways in order to improve the situation with submitting post-placement reports on wellbeing of Ukrainian children adopted by the U.S. citizens. The participants agreed on further cooperation on adoption issues.
